Leadership Newspaper shows its concern and support for the abducted Chibok girls by listing them as its 2015 Young Persons of the Year – According to the organizers of the award, the Chibok girls made the list of awardees because of their symbolic role as an open wound in the nation’s fight against terrorism The abducted Chibok girls have been awarded as the 2015 Young Persons of the Year at the just concluded Leadership Newspaper Award. It was also gathered that the girls were awarded with Young Persons of the Year award for two consecutive times in solidarity with the parents and families and unrelenting spirit of the #BringBackOurGirls campaigners.
The award was received by the parents of the abducted girls led by the chairman of the abducted girls parents association, Yakubu Nkeki. Former President Goodluck Jonathan had emerged star of the day the awards. He emerged Person of the year alongside President Muhammadu Buhari and former chairman of Independent National electoral commission, Professor Attahiru Jega.
Jonathan was equally well praised by each speaker at the two hour ceremony held in Abuja. On the night of April 14, 2014, members of the Boko Haram sect attacked and abducted 276 female students of the Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno state. However, 58 of the abducted girls managed to escape but 218 girls remained in the hands of their captors, even after two years of abduction.
