OWERRI—The South East governors have been accused of complacency, as
rampaging herdsmen kidnap, kill, maim and senselessly destroy and
takeover people’s farmlands in the geopolitical zone.
A priest of the Ahiara Catholic Diocese, Rev. Fr. Ben Ogu, fired the
salvo yesterday in Owerri, while reacting to the reported kidnap of
Rector of Tansi Major Seminary, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Dim by herdsmen.
Fr. Ogu equally lamented that two other priests, Rev. FRS. Jude
Chukwuneke and Jude Ezeokana, who were in the same vehicle with their
brother priest, escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
“The level of complacency among the South East governors is getting
worrisome and most unbeatable. They only weep and speak big grammar,
while their people are senselessly butchered by herdsmen,” Fr. Ogu said.

The cleric eulogised Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, for “not
waiting until his people were killed, before enacting the appropriate
law to effectively check the activities of herdsmen in his state.”
Answering a question, Fr. Ogu said that the growing cases of the kidnap
and the dehumanization of Catholic priests in the country, portends
serious danger for the church and society.
“I am very worried that there has been no serious reaction from the
Federal Government since the recent gruesome murder of innocent people
in Enugu State. This is a type of religious jihad”, Ogu said.
It was his considered opinion that Igbo youths should ask their
governors why they are not interested in defending the people.
“It is sad that well known murderers are walking free, while the
non-violent loyalists of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Movement
for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, are
hounded, killed, maimed, persecuted and prosecuted by government”, Ogu
said.
The Catholic cleric said he was “very angry with the way Nigerian
leaders, including religious leaders, are very comfortable in the
present hard economic environment, while many are angry, hungry, sick,
hapless and hopeless.”
